re: “aromantic relationships” and marriage as “the New Platonic Ideal”

    December 7, 2016 / No Comments

minamina0013: queerascat: minamina0013: queerascat: …as much as i love this thread of posts in theory, my tired ass can’t help but sit here wondering why anyone need even get married at all to do or have any of the above things, the few actual legal matters that were mentioned aside. also, this uplifting of “aromantic relationships” and marriage as “the New Platonic Ideal” feels incredibly uncomfortable… @queerascat I agree I think a lot of those things could be achieved by simply being roommates. It’s pretty funny that what they’re dubbing as “the New Platonic Ideal” already has a name, it’s called “friendship”. Aromantic relationships could be called friendships if that’s how you want to label it but personally as an aro I would consider a relationship with another aro as queer platonic. Our relationship may not be romantic but I wouldn’t say that my QPP(s) and I are just ‘friends’ who…

    on perpetual exhaustion

    December 4, 2016 / 2 Comments

that feel when someone asks you how you are and you respond saying that you’re “tired”, knowing full well that they’ll take what you said differently from how you meant it. but that’s okay. because you’re fucking tired. you don’t have the energy to do anything about their understanding of the word anyway. hell, you yourself may not even know what kind of tired you are that day. are you depressed tired? are you anemic tired? are you queer tired? are you gaslighted tired? are you black tired? are you expat tired? are you anxious tired? are you one of the Many Other Kinds of tired? are you All Of The Above And More tired? ah yes, that’s right. you are a unique concoction of All The Above And More tired, further compounded upon by having to persevere through life as if you aren’t actually tired at all. when life…

QAC 55.5 – Life Update: Post-Election Mental Health | Staying In Japan | Outted To Dad

    November 23, 2016 / No Comments

two weeks ago any vague plans that i’d had for my immediate future were abruptly shattered when America elected Trump as the next president of the United States. two weeks later, i’m still struggling to cope with the news and the resulting blow to my already poor mental health. in this video, i give voice to my thoughts on being forced to navigate HRT in Japan and forgo (for the time being) other gender-related medical things that i’d hoped to pursue in America. i also talk about possibly moving to Tokyo in a year’s time, having been outted to my dad via Twitter and a new book by Ashley Mardell that i highly recommend. longass video is long, so here are some jump points for those of you only interested in specific things. @00:00 – post-election mental health @03:50 – shattered future; staying in Japan @08:55 – name change, HRT…

    “Dyke Deck” by Catherine Opie

    November 20, 2016 / No Comments

…so somehow this vintage deck of lesbian-themed playing cards made it all the way from Los Angeles to a christmas market in middle-of-nowhere Japan and into my hands today. [“Dyke Deck” by Catherine Opie] were sold at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles but are SOLD OUT. Includes 52 playing cards, 2 jokers, instruction sheet, and case. Opie created this humorous deck to explore the issue of the lesbian body in photography. Many of the women in the photos are friends of Opie’s while others came to an open call in San Francisco. In the “Dyke Deck” Opie divided up the imags into four categories to correspond with the four suits: couples are hearts, jocks are clubs, femmes are diamonds and butches are spades.   as a lover and enthusiast of black & white photography and queer person myself, this feels a bit like that thing some people call “fate”?…

re: gaslighting in the aftermath of the 2016 US presidential election

    November 19, 2016 / No Comments

ifshehadwings: queerascat: in case you missed it: Clarkisha Kent (@IWriteAllDay_) sparked an important conversation on Twitter about how in the aftermath of the 2016 US presidential election, even people who claim to support those of us who are most in danger from a Trump / Pence presidency have been guilty of gaslighting (and scapegoating) us, but we must (and will) persevere regardless. see also: “Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America & I Will Never Be OK With It” ※ image description / transcript below. Keep reading Guys this is a good thread with important things to say but I’ve really got to speak up for my girl Elizabeth Warren. People keep accusing her of this, I assume based on watching or hearing about her speech to the AFLCIO following the election. Here’s the thing though. I actually watched the whole speech and every word of it past the first few minutes is…

…today America elected Donald Trump as president.

    November 9, 2016 / No Comments

…today America decided for me that i can’t “come home” for at least another 4 years. i might not have anyway, but at least the option was there. there’s a lot of talk of people wanting to leave America. i get that. i said the same thing living in America when Bush was elected. if only i’d known that leaving America doesn’t actually mean escaping it. not like i’d thought, anyway. next year will be my 10th year of living abroad. i never imagined i’d ever live abroad at all let alone for as long as i have, but the longer i do the harder it becomes to envision a life back in America again. even so, 4 more years on top of the time i’ve already spent abroad puts me that much closer to having spent half of my life abroad… but perhaps that doesn’t even matter, because after today…

another day, another episode of YouTube Drama à la Arielle Scarcella.

    October 26, 2016 / No Comments

there are few people who i adamantly refer to a pieces of shit, Donald Trump and Arielle Scarcella being two of them. hell, i make it a point to avoid anything and everything that has Arielle in it, but being a YouTuber involved in many of the communities that Arielle likes to shit on means that her drama always finds its way into my social media outlets regardless. sigh.

    #SpiritDay 2016

    October 19, 2016 / No Comments

queerascat: as a teacher i’ve seen and heard of a lot of bullying, especially here in Japan where, sadly, #SpiritDay isn’t even really a thing. even though none of my students will take notice of it, i’ll be wearing purple today in honor of #SpiritDay. ※ took it upon myself to edit some of GLAAD’s #SpiritDay images to make them more accurate about myself and included an illustration of some homophobic and transphobic things i’ve heard my students saying to each other. a year has passed. it’s now #SpiritDay 2016 and the above post is as true now as it was last year with one exception. already in the early hours of the morning on #SpiritDay (JST) i’ve seen more awareness of the day and supportive tweets from Japanese Twitter! a very happy change from last year. 🙂 consider getting involved yourself and taking a stand against bullying this Thursday…

    them gay enbian feels

    October 16, 2016 / No Comments

archiving Twitter stuff. again. i should really stop saying meaningful (to me) things on Twitter where it’ll disappear into my feed beyond retrieval. that or, you know, i could just rehash the same thoughts directly on Tumblr… but where’s the fun in that? anyway, random thoughts on being bi / pan and enbian– wooo…. but see, it gets even ““gayer”” because by “nbs like themself” i totally mean non-binary people who are like me and i don’t just mean in that they’re also non-binary. for one, binary people aren’t the only people who can be (hyper)masculine and / or (hyper)feminine. secondly, masculinity / femininity isn’t even a defining factor of attraction for me, even if it can be a potential point of aversion… my understanding of my own attraction may be nearly as nebulous as my actual experience with it, but if there’s one thing that i know for sure it’s that any attraction i do…
