Dear White People: About “People of Color” (POC)

    December 23, 2015 / No Comments

this is post is the blog version of a vlog that i recently posted to my YouTube channel. the content is essentially the same, but feel free to check out both. as you can probably tell by the title, this is going to be a rant. that said, i hope that something can be learned from it. why have i titled this “Dear White People”? even if white people aren’t solely guilty of what i’m about to talk about, i’m calling out white people specifically because i see white people of various countries doing this far more than anyone else. if you yourself are white and you consider yourself to be an ally to people of color, this post was written specifically for you.

QAC 44 – Dear White People: About “People of Color” (POC) | A Rant

    December 20, 2015 / No Comments

i’ve long since had issues with how some people, specifically white people, repeatedly misuse the term “People of Color” (aka “POC”). at long last i’m finally putting my frustrations into words in the hope of bringing awareness to these issues. in the interest of being as brief as possible, in this video i’ve summarize my issues regarding white people’s usage of this term into two points: treating POC as if they are a homogeneous group. ( @00:29 ~ ) treating whiteness as if it is the default not only in one’s own country, but internationally. ( @4:12  ~ ) obviously when people who consider themselves to be allies to POC make such mistakes the mistakes are honest ones with no ill intent behind them. however, that does not change the fact that mistakes are being made and that these mistakes should be corrected. if you consider yourself to be an…

Q&A not Q&A: “…the first definition of [aporagender] was literally “same as third gender but white people can use too”…”

    December 14, 2015 / No Comments

anonymous said: Not trying to start an argument by any means, but I think the reason that person said aporagender (I’ve probably spelt that wrong) is racist, is because the first definition of it was literally “same as third gender but white people can use too” or something along those lines, which some see as racist, because something that’s the same as third gender, considering the terms history, shouldn’t be for white people. Sorry if this sounded argumentative thats not my aim at all ? having kept a watchful eye on the term aporagender pretty much since around the time of its coinage (because it was in fact coined around the exact same time that i coined maverique) i can safely say that i have never seen the word defined nor described in that way. as such, i am extremely skeptical that that is the reason why the anon is…

Q&A: “One of my cis male friends said he identifies as a lesbian.”

    December 14, 2015 / No Comments

anonymous said: One of my cis male friends said he identifies as a lesbian. When I tried telling him that wasn’t okay, he said that I have to respect his identity and that anyone who identifies as a lesbian is a lesbian. He used nonbinary people as an example. He called me a gatekeeper. What can I do/say? Is he right? Can anyone id as a lesbian? Is it always bad to be a gatekeeper? …i find myself wanting to think that this friend of yours was just kidding, was just trying to pull your leg, was perhaps trying to put into words something about himself but upon failing at finding better words settling on those words– but perhaps i really am just grasping at straws and your friend really is just a cis binary male who identifies as a lesbian. i actually googled “male lesbian” just now and got a…

Q&A not Q&A: ” Aporagender is an appropriative term used/coined by white people…”

    December 14, 2015 / No Comments

anonymous said: On the aporagender topic. Aporagender is an appropriative term used/coined by white people who were sad they couldn’t use the term third gender. I’d advise you to use maverique, which is basically the same, but coined by a PoC and thus not appropriative. dear anon, care to explain what, exactly, is being appropriated by aporagender? the word itself isn’t appropriative, so what is it that’s being appropriated? do you seriously think that people of color are the only people who have the right to coin words for their own gender if it happens to be completely outside of the male-female binary?? also, you do realize that “third gender” is a word coined and used by white colonialist and anthropologists to indiscriminately and non-consensually label the genders of non-white people that they deemed “deviant” from “the norm”? that “third gender” itself is a white colonialist term, not a ‘POC term’?? yes, it’s a…

Q&A: “Bisexism is the discriminating views of bisexuals against monosexuals…”

    December 8, 2015 / No Comments

anonymous said: “Bisexism is the discriminating views of bisexuals against monosexuals. Bisexists believe that limiting oneself to only one gender or sex is forced and discriminative, and due to social conditioning rather than free thought. ” Thoughts? this is the first time i’ve ever heard of the term “bisexism”. my initial thoughts are: why is this even being called “bisexism”? is it because the coiner of this word thinks that only bi people could hold such views? is it because the coiner thinks that bi people are the only people attracted to more than one gender? is it just because the coiner happened to encounter people who were bi who held such views? seriously, why are bi people the ones being called out for this? as if others aren’t capable of holding the ignorant views that are being referred to as “bisexism”. if someone wants to argue for the word “multisexism” in response to…

Q&A: “”Wow, I would have never known you use to be a girl!” How would that be offensive?”

    November 26, 2015 / No Comments

anonymous said: I saw the pictures you reposted with the transgender people. The one that said, “Wow, I would have never known you use to be a girl!” How would that be offensive? I feel like that would be an okay thing to say? Sorry if I’m coming off as rude. ? (the post in question) saying something like that to a trans person is offensive for several reasons. perhaps some of the biggest reasons are that: a trans person never “used to be” anything. just because doctors and society assumed them to be something else in the past doesn’t mean they were ever anything other than the gender that they are. just as a trans man doesn’t start being a man after transitioning, a trans man doesn’t stop being a girl after transitioning. they were never a girl to begin with. it can be dysphoria inducing to have someone…

comments on my “QAC 36 – What Acephobia & Asexual Erasure Looks Like” video.

    November 26, 2015 / No Comments

had ignored this user’s original comment on my “QAC 36 – What Acephobia & Asexual Erasure Looks Like” video for weeks but couldn’t let it go uncommented on any longer after waking up to their most recent comment. i’m sick with a cold and unable to even think clearly, so it’s likely that i flew off the handle or said something in a way that could have been said better, but i tried. really am too sick and tired and anxious in general to deal with shit like this…. and while i obviously made no effort to hide the names of the users who commented (i mean, the comments are public and easily findable on the video anyway), i’m not posting this here for anyone to attack the commenter. please don’t, although you’re free to join in on the convo if you want. i’m 100% done with it. …now to take…

Q&A: “why is passing considered a privilege with some identities but not others…”

    November 8, 2015 / No Comments

anonymous said: I feel like for the disabled community and the POC community being able to pass is considered a privilege. I had read a previous anon q you answered and I felt like some of the things you mentioned in it could apply to these communities as well. Ex. Having a part of your identity being erased being oppressive and not a privilege. I guess I’m wanting to hear your opinion about why passing is considered a privilege with some identities but not others. Thanks! [the post that anon is referring to] hi, anon! i think it’s safe to assume that it’s “able-bodied passing privilege” and “white passing privilege” that you had in mind in your ask. in my humble opinion, many of the things that i said in my other post equally apply to both of these concepts of “passing privilege” as well. i may be the only person in the…

Q&A: “do you think there’s something about sex positivity that oppresses aces of color?”

    November 7, 2015 / No Comments

anonymous said: So I’m ace, and I’ve started questioning where I stand on the whole “sex positive/negative” thing. I’ve generally been really sex positive because I believe people should do what they want as long as it’s consensual. So I replied to another ace who was telling college freshmen to “chill” about having sex so soon by telling them that it’s not really their business. And eventually it escalated to them calling me a racist for being sex positive and they didn’t really explain why? They said something about me silencing and erasing people and pressing my white views onto others, but they didn’t give any explanation for all that. I want to learn more, but I feel like if I ask them, they won’t explain anything and they’ll just keep insulting me. So, feel free to not to answer this if it seems like I’m barging in here and…
